First ever leadership retreat

Campus leadership students embark on their first ever Hume Lake Christian Camp retreat, Sept. 9.

The trip was organized by current leadership co-advisor and former Hume employee, Aubri Foster, alongside social studies teacher and fellow advisor, Robert Foshee. Students participated in a variety of physical activities, including the high ropes course, “Ponderosa Plunge” free fall and bubble soccer.

The activities focused on team bonding, growing their leadership abilities, and with their relationship with God. The activities were followed by an encouraging devotion by the high ropes director, Tim Prairie, persuading students to lift up one another as a team, and not drag each other down.

Foster found encouragement through the teamwork that she witnessed.

“It was exciting to see them encourage each other and lift up one another in hard places and pull one another up, both literally and figuratively,” Foster said. Her personal highlight was watching the grueling falls and tumbles of bubble soccer and seeing the senior boys, in particular, collide with one another.

Foshee enjoys the personal impact that students and teachers received through connections, valuing the opportunities that a one on one experience provides in the context of a high school student leadership team.

“The more experiences that we have with one another help us grow bonds and trust as a class,” Foshee said. “Seeing peoples’ personalities outside of class was fun because some people aren’t morning people, afternoon people or school people. We had the opportunity to become more personal.”

Students also commented on their personal experience. Associated Student Body President Roman Endicott, ‘18, appreciates the spiritual and interpersonal aspect of retreat.

“I grew closer to my classmates in leadership and really bonded with them on a spiritual level,” Endicott said. “Apart from learning more about my peers, the ropes course taught me about pushing through tough circumstances and relying on the support and encouragement of those around you.”

ASB Chaplain Erin Wilson, ‘18, values the connections that were made and sees them as encouraging for the rest of the year.

“The connections we made will affect the rest of the year,” Wilson said, “because now as leadership we can grow together and serve together better than we could’ve before when we didn’t know each other as well. My highlight of retreat was playing volleyball with everyone, it was really fun just to hang out with everyone.”

Leadership students return home later that day, prepared with new skills to continue planning homecoming, Oct. 6, and Sadies, Oct. 28.
