Students in Dr. Karen Walters’ fifth-period zoology class kick off their unit on the phylum Mollusca, Sept. 20.
Walters brought in cephalopods (octopus), bivalves (clams) and gastropods (sea snails) to teach students some of the classes of Mollusks.
Sophomore Brittany McCann finds the lab helpful to understand different phylum animals more intricately.
“The lab helped me get more of a sense as to how the whole dynamic of the creatures in the phylum work and it was a visual aid as well to see more of how their bodies are structured,” McCann said. “I enjoyed being able to get more hands-on and up close with the animals and see the frames of their bodywork. I’m looking forward to a lot in the class, I had wanted to take it for a long time. I’m looking forward to more dissections and possibly get to know the guys in my class a little better.”
Students dissected octopi, clams and other phylum animals to gain more information on the way they live and function.
