On November 11, 1918, in a railroad car near the Western Front, an armistice was signed to end World War I. That same day became known as Armistice Day and eventually Veterans Day, a day to remember the sacrifices made by veterans of conflicts.
Campus history teacher Kori Friesen believes veterans are important in connecting the past with the present.
“Freedom is not free and honoring the men and women who paid the price, made the sacrifice, and served so that I can freely live, deserve our highest regard,” Friesen said. “Veterans have significant value, especially historically because they give perspective to the American spirit that many don’t understand or have. Their insight is invaluable to those who listen and engage.
“Warfare and the American homefront have significantly changed through the decades but the veterans tie those years together with a common cause and characteristics,” Friesen continued. Learning their stories and retelling them continues their legacy and builds patriotism. I make sure each year in class to spend time looking at the historical value of this day and also connect it personally to their own lives.”
To observe Veterans Day, Fresno Christian will close and there will be no school to allow students and staff time to reflect on the sacrifices made by veterans, Nov. 10.
Member of the campus marching band, Janae Shew, ‘20, wants to honor veterans through her performance in the upcoming Fresno Veterans Day Parade.
“I am marching in the Veterans Day Parade with the school marching band,” Shew said. “It is important for our students to observe Veterans Day especially because of how few of our World War II veterans are left and give them the respect they deserve. Our veterans have shaped history in all of America’s wars by fighting hard.”
The Feather will not publish any content or media on Friday, Nov. 10 to observe Veterans Day. However, The Feather plans on publishing at least one article on Saturday, as co-editor-in-chief Alex Rurik will publish a Feature on a Japanese internment survivor.
