Powder Rough practice

[/media-credit] Sophomore Blake Burdan practices with his class preparing for the upcoming Powder Rough game, Nov. 29.

Blake Burdan, ’20, passes the ball as one of the many drills ran through during the first day of Powder Rough practice, Nov. 29.

Boys from each grade sign up to participate in FC’s first ever Powder Rough game. Powder Rough is much similar to the annual Powder Puff, however, instead of girls playing football, boys receive the opportunity to play volleyball.

Leading up to the game, students who have signed up are coached throughout the week by their classmates on the girls volleyball team. Practices begin Wednesday and will continue until Friday, taking place during lunch.

On Wednesday each grade shares the space, practicing in a different section of the gym. Coaches cover basic skills of the sport. Thursday and Friday at lunch, two grades scrimmage while the others practice on their own running drills.

Coaches from each grade teach their team the basics of volleyball, rules and give advice. During practice, each player receives criticism to prepare for the final game Monday after school.

Junior class team captain Griffin Schmidt is excited about seeing what his class is capable of at the big game based on what he has seen so far in practice.

“I am most excited to see how well our class can compete against the other classes,” Schmidt said. “I feel that our team has some good talent but we just need it to put all together at once. I have had a lot of fun bonding with my classmates and playing volleyball. I think that the Juniors will win.

The game will take place after school Monday, Dec. 4. Classes will be 30 minutes long due to special Powder Rough bell schedule. The game will begin after lunch at 1:15. The Powder Rough bell schedule is as follows:

Period 1: 8 – 8:35 a.m.
