Perigee full moon

[/media-credit] Senior Cayla Rivas took the supermoon photo at 5:15 a.m. in Fresno, Calif. under clear skies.

The latest supermoon of 2017 appears Dec. 3. Otherwise known as a perigee full moon. The unique moon is the nearest to earth as it will appear all year.

The supermoon happens when the moon reaches its closest point on its orbit around the Earth. The term “supermoon” was coined by media on March 19, 2011, to describe the full moon that date when it aligned with proxigee, the closest perigee of the year.

According to NASA’s Gordon Johnson, the supermoon seems seven percent bigger and 16 percent brighter to the naked eye.

The next supermoon will appear Jan. 2, 2018, and then Jan. 31, 2018, which will be called a “Blue Moon” because it is the second supermoon in one month.
