Boys from each class hit the court to play in the first annual Powder Rough tournament, Dec. 4. A special half-day schedule was created to allow for the fun and games to begin at 1:15 p.m.

This take on Powder Puff involved boys from each class playing volleyball under the guidance of girl volleyball players from their respective classes. The athlete’s practiced during lunches from Nov. 29 – Dec. 1.

Hunter Raynes, ‘21, competed on the freshman team in the Powder Rough tournament. Raynes enjoyed being one of the first people to ever participate in the FC Powder Rough tournament.

“I think It was pretty fun and we all got good playing time in,” Raynes said. “It was something different and a new experience, Also spending some time with my friends was cool. I will definitely do this next year too and anyone else who goes to this school should definitely try it. It’s something unique and I don’t think that many schools get to do something like this.”

Steven Hayes, ‘20, participated on the sophomore team. New to FC, the event allowed Hayes to meet more of his class.

“I really liked Powder Rough,” Hayes said. “Everybody was excited and we just had a really good time. Even though we got 4th place it is still kind of winning. I will 100% play next year. I think it was well planned, everyone was on task, there were no mistakes and it was fun.”

Final standings:

Juniors: 1

Seniors: 2

Freshmen: 3

Sophomores: 4

Darrin Williams, ‘19, took part in the match for the junior team. The junior class beat the seniors 25-20 in the final match of the tournament.

“The practices were really fun getting to hang out with the guys and play volleyball,” Williams said.  “I don’t think we really learned anything but we got better at everything. We knew they did help a little bit. I would definitely play next year. It was super fun and exciting that we won.”

Coach of the senior team, Celeste Counts, elaborates on her favorite moments of the tournament.

“Since Kensy (Neal) and I were on the varsity volleyball team we were chosen to coach because we know how to play the game,” Counts said. “I was really excited when I found out I would be coaching because volleyball is my favorite sport and I knew it would be fun to coach my peers. I enjoyed coaching my peers but it was also stressful because I didn’t want them to lose. My favorite part was watching the boys play and see them work together.”
