Andrea Donaghe, high school English teacher, prepares to cut 12 inches of her hair and donate to Locks of Love, Feb. 9.

After enjoying her 18 inches of long hair for a whole year, trimming it twice, Donaghe decided to cut her hair but with a purpose.

The public non-profit organizations provides hairpieces to financially disadvantaged children in the U.S. and Canada under the age of 21 who are suffering from long-term medical hair loss from any diagnosis.

Their mission statement is, “Our mission is to return a sense of self, confidence and normalcy to children suffering from hair loss by utilizing donated ponytails to provide the highest quality hair prosthetics to financially disadvantaged children. The children receive hair prostheses free of charge.”

Her involvement with the organization sprouted from hearing about a family friend’s daughter who was losing her hair due to medical treatments she was receiving. 

Donaghe shares her excitement for the change and anxiousness to cut her hair.

“I am really excited to be cutting my hair,” Donaghe said. “In the year I have decided to grow it out, I have already cut it twice. This is the longest my hair has ever been and it is driving me crazy! Think of how much money I’ll save on shampoo now!”
