Scholastic Journalism Week (SJW) occurs every year as a time to recognize the hard work student journalists put into reporting truth to their communities. This year the week occurs on Feb. 18-23, advertising the importance of news and student journalism.
The sources that students use to attain news information affects the way they view the world. Scholastic Journalism Week acts as a time to recognize students who take the time to influence their peers worldview through newspaper articles.
This year’s theme, “Student Voice, Student Choice”, is all about using the student free press as an open forum for free expression that is run by students, for students. The theme emphasizes the freedom of press as one to be recognized and communicated by students.
Last year, the week’s theme was “The Communities We Cover”, focusing on the communities students are involved with every day and how they impacted them. The theme focused on serving the community, no matter the occasion. It encouraged students to reach areas in their communities they wouldn’t normally pay attention to.
Feather staffers hand out flyers to our students promoting Scholastic Journalism week, Feb. 21. These flyers prepare the students for an activity later in the day and encourage them to engage in this year’s Scholastic Journalism week.
Later in the day, campus students participate in a lunch time activity hosted by Feather staff members. Students are given 15 sec. to write down the five freedoms of the First Amendment to be entered to win $10 Starbucks gift certificates. Do you know your five freedoms?
1st Amendment
5 Freedoms
Freedom of Religion
Freedom of Speech
