Winter sports come to an end and players prepare to celebrate. The 4th annual winter sports awards ceremony takes place in the Peoples Church gym at 7 p.m., March 5. All participants gather to commemorate a full season of wins and losses and ‘best ofs’.

Athletics director Jon Penberthy hosts and organizes the event, introducing coaches and presenting awards to players. He anticipates a bittersweet night, saying goodbye to senior players while awarding each players’ accomplishments.

“For the winter banquet we’ll give out awards for JV and varsity boys basketball, girls varsity basketball, girls varsity soccer and boys varsity soccer,” Penberthy said. “My job is to organize the event and make sure everything runs as smooth as possible. We have a lot of our seniors leaving but it will be a good time to celebrate and honor them. ”

During the winter season, boys basketball made it to the first round of playoffs and boys soccer just missed out on the playoffs. Varsity basketball senior Jacob Provost enjoyed cheering on his teammates this season and playing on a team for the last time before college.

“This season I think I did all right,” Provost said. “I didn’t perform as well as I’d like to but it is what it is and I did the best I could for my team. I had a lot of fun with my teammates this year and I’m hoping they had fun too. As a team we had our moments overall we worked hard and did well.”

Girls basketball finished 9th overall in Division V and girls soccer were runner-ups in the Division VI Valley Championship.

Varsity basketball starter, Hannah Villines, ‘21, experienced a season full of surprises and good memories. With many new players on the team, she thought the season went really well while everyone stepped up to their position.

“I think that as a team, we definitely exceeded everyone’s expectations,” Villines said. “We went out and played as hard as we could, which is better than we all thought possible. The best part of this season was definitely bonding with my team and getting to be a part of another family. My goal for next year is just to get better and keep improving.”

Parents plan to bring desserts and refreshments, honoring the players who put effort into the winter sports. Awards will be given out by coaches, recognizing those who played important roles on the team at 7 p.m. in the PC gym, March 5.

Spring sports are next! Come out and support the softball, baseball, track, golf and boys tennis teams as their upcoming seasons kick off.
