AP Euro dress up

[/media-credit] AP Euro dresses up as Enlightenment Era figures and have an in-character class discussion, Nov. 29.

AP Euro students and teacher Kori Friesen participate in the annual Enlightenment Salon Day, Nov. 29. The class dresses up and becomes a famous figure from the era for the day.

Friesen’s historical alias for the day is Marie Thérèse Rodet Geoffrin, owner of the salon that the day’s class discussion would revolve around.

Sophomore Jacob Hyatt enjoyed the opportunity to learn more about famous Enlightenment Era figures in a unique manner. Hyatt became Immanuel Kant, German philosopher, for the day.

“It was a fun way to learn about Enlightenment Era thinkers because each students had to know so much about their assigned person,” Hyatt said. “It was different than just learning from a teacher and learning from your peers. I thought it was super interesting when I researched more into Immanuel Kant and how so much he has done is still used in today’s culture.”

18th century salons were a place where philosophers, artists, mathematicians and theologians would gather to discuss and dine over broad topics. This historical meeting place is the inspiration for the classrooms’ transformation into Salon de Madame Geoffrin.

Every year, AP Euro participates in this activity as a way to break from the normal classroom environment, and learn hands on. The role-play activity allows students to teach their classmates about their historical alias while enjoying a luncheon.
