[/media-credit] Sophomore Alyssa Reese begins reading “The House On Mango Street”, Jan. 10.

English II starts off the new semester by beginning a new book titled “The House On Mango Street” by Sandra Cisneros, Jan. 10.

English and yearbook teacher, Andrea Donaghe, assigned students ten questions to get background information on Cisneros to give students a pictures of what her life was like.

Cisneros is a Mexican-American writer. Her most popular book is “The House on Mango Street.” Over six million copies were sold and won the Before Columbus Foundation’s American Book Award in 1985. Cisneros earned her bachelor of arts degree at Loyola University Chicago 1976. Cisneros also received a masters in fine arts at University of Iowa in 1978 and has founded two non-profit organizations.

In the first semester, sophomores read two other books, “The Hiding Place” by Corrie Ten Boom, and “Night” by Elie Wiesel.

Students in Donaghe’s English II class also studied poetry and nursery rhymes in the first semester. Students were put into groups and assigned a nursery rhyme to create a thinking map. The class discovers the real meaning behind the nursery rhyme and it’s plot.
