As high school students begin the second semester of the 2018-’19 school year, new motorists acquire their driver’s license. Students across the nation study for the permit test and practice for the behind the wheel driver’s test.
California law states that once a teenager reaches the age of fifteen and a half, they can obtain their permit to operate and learn to drive a vehicle. The process includes completing an in-class or online course where they learn the rules of the road and take the exam at the DMV.
Brynlee Schmidt, ’21, who just recently got her permit, says that getting her permit was very nerve-racking, but she is so excited she did it.
“I was nervous cause I didn’t want to fail the test,” Schmidt said. “I was super excited when I passed and I wanted to start driving immediately so that I could be able to go places whenever I want to. I get my license on April. 8, but I have not done much to prepare yet besides doing the behind the wheel classes with an instructor.”
Natalie Arndt, ’21, talks about how she did not pass her first permit test but plans to retake the test in the future.
“Today I went in to take my permit test and unfortunately I didn’t pass,” Arndt said. “I only missed it by one but I learned a lot. The DMV is insane. I can hopefully retake it in the next few weeks. This time I plan to actually read the DMV study booklet and take more online quizzes. I plan to use this failure as a reason to work harder.”
DMV offers a tip sheet on “How to apply for a permit if you are under 18“. New and old drivers might also benefit by reading the new laws affecting California drivers in 2019.
