Winter guard practices for upcoming competition

[/media-credit] Junior Brittany McCann practices for the upcoming competition, Jan. 25.

With the start of the new year, winter guard officially begins their competition season, Jan. 25.  In preparation, the team practices during first period and after school.

The team is led by coaches Alicia Gonzales and Michelle Rodriguez. They have been preparing for this years’ winter guard season since the beginning of 2018-19 school year.

Junior Brittany McCann has been a part of color guard and winter guard for five years and loves watching other teams perform so she can learn from them.

“I kind of got stuck in color guard my seventh-grade year,” McCann said. “My schedule got messed up and so I got put in color guard instead of PE, but I never switched my schedule back. I ended up really enjoying it. My favorite part is getting to know new people from different grade levels and not just my own.

“I also like the performance aspect and when all the hard work pays off it feels really good,” McCann continued. “My favorite part about the winter guard competition season is that it’s different than what color guard usually does during parade season. It’s much more competitive and I love watching other teams perform and socializing.”

The team will perform at Clovis East, Jan.26, 1:06 p.m. for the San Joaquin Valley Color Guard and Percussion Review. Event admission prices: adults – $10, students – $8. Make sure you come out and support the winter guard team.
