FC varsity cheer brings home a trophy, placing fourth in the Varsity Intermediate division of the 43rd annual Clovis Pep Classic competition, Jan. 26.

The team collectively performs several stunts and a dance routine at Clovis High. Cheer’s weekly 7 a.m. practices paid off.

Freshman Ashley Logan enjoys the competitive spirit of competition season, but also appreciates the opportunity to share God’s love.

“I think as a team we are most excited to try to do better and better each competition,” Logan said. “We want to show that we are performing to shine God’s light on the mat and we aren’t just there to win. I think today’s competition went good. Some of us were a little nervous but we we were all super excited. We did our routine the best we had ever done at the last comp, and we wanted to try to do even better. I think we all felt really good about this comp today and feel like we did really well.”

The Clovis Pep Classic is varsity’s second competition of the season. Their first, CIF Championships, took place last month, Dec. 1. FC cheer placed fourth at the CIF Championships in the Varsity Intermediate division.

Next up, varsity and JH cheer will be competing in the FCC Nationals at Azusa Pacific University, Feb. 2. Generally, HS cheer competes in the Varsity Intermediate division, except for their next competition; the campus team will be advancing and competing in the Open Cheer division.

With nationals approaching, Logan feels the nerves kicking in regarding stunt difficulty increasing, but looks forward to a memorable LA trip with her team.

“We are a little nervous about nationals because we are going to be putting in some harder stunts because we are in the open division,” Logan said. “We are all excited to travel to LA to compete against some of the teams that were at cheer camp with us. We’ve been doing our routine thousands of times to prepare for nationals. We even have 7 a.m. practices on Wednesdays, where we practice everything for two and a half hours.”

Put it on your calendar! Head out to Azusa Pacific and support your FC varsity and JH cheer teams as they complete in their next competition, Feb. 2!

According to Logan, the more attendees, the more energy there is in each performance.

“Having people want to come out and see us and give us encouragement helps us a lot,” Logan said. “It’s just nice to know that people care. I think it also gives us more excitement to preform in front of our friends and family and show them how good we are.”
