Feather staffers prepare for NSPA

[/media-credit] Seniors Kaylie Clem (left) and Kamryn Schultz work on their sessions for NSPA, April 10.

Presentations, photo posts and articles are written in preparation for the upcoming NSPA Anaheim trip, April 23-27, along with an Instagram story JEA takeover. The Feather focuses to teach eight sessions at the JEA/NSPA convention.

The goal for Feather speakers at the convention is to discuss important elements of the team and share it with other journalists.

Seniors and editor-in-chiefs Alexander Rurik, Samuel Cross and Kamryn Schultz plan to teach ‘From the Top Down’ along with adviser Greg Stobbe. They will talk about leadership expectations, editorials and assigning journalists to articles.

Cross and senior editor Addison Schultz, ’21, will cover the session, ‘Impact with Infographics’. Here other journalists can learn “tips and tricks for enhancing your articles with infographics” and how Feather journalists incorporate these into written assignments.

‘Image as Your Hook’ will be one of two teaching sessions photojournalist editors Kaylie Clem, ’19, and Julia Fikse, ’19, will lead with their adviser Kori Friesen. Here, the importance of choosing an image as a hook to draw in viewers will be discussed. The second session the photo editors plan to cover will be ‘Enhance with the ‘gram (Instagram)’. The power of visual news and tricks to creating a professional page on social media creates a foundation for an online newspaper.

With multiple sessions taught by The Feather this year, topics concerning video making and other social media outlets such as Twitter will also be available to hear at the NSPA conference.

Video editors Braden Bell, ’20, Blake Deffenbacher, ’20, and Friesen bring tips to creating ‘Quality and Quantity with Style’ in videos. ‘Tweet it Up: Twitter as a Major Tool’ covers how to create compelling tweets that engage viewers and connect them to the main website. This one is taught by Bell, Logan Lewis, ’20, and Stobbe.

A new session taught by Friesen and Stobbe directs towards advisers only. An open discussion on ‘Elements of an Award-Winning Team: Feather advisers Open Up’ provide insight for other teachers on how The Feather remains relevant in the high school newspaper world.

All sessions lead by students will be accompanied by an adviser.
