Student body looks forward to upcoming events

Kicking off the school year with a time of worship and prayer, the student body gathered in the Peoples Church main auditorium for convocation before school started, Aug. 12.  Superintendent Jeremy Brown welcomed students and families back to school by sharing the theme bible verse for the 2019-2020 school year, Phillipians 4:8.

Alumna and secondary Principal Amy Deffenbacher, ‘94, shares why she values the feeling of community during convocation. Although FCS started in 1970, due to the restrictions of having multiple campuses, the entire student body only began to gather for convocation seven years ago.

“I think it’s an exciting way to start the school year with everybody in one room,” Principal Deffenbacher said. “It’s a good reminder that even though we’re all certain grade levels and on certain tracks of our education, that one of the greatest features of Fresno Christian is the community, and the opportunity for that community to come together.”

First-year student, Elizabeth Baker, ‘23, notices how kind the students and teachers are at FCS after her first few school days. Baker enjoys the new experience of high school and the smaller classes compared to her former school, Sierra Junior High.

“At my first convocation I felt very welcomed because I got to meet a lot of new people,” Baker said. “Praying as a whole student body was also a really cool experience. I was nervous because I had only seen the school once on my tour, but after school I couldn’t believe the whole day had gone by so fast.”

The following podcast features Principal Amy Deffenbacher expanding her thoughts on convocation.

Reminiscing to her favorite convocation, Deffenbacher remembers when Brown used a creative example to emphasize his speech.

“I really enjoyed the year when Mr. Brown used a Lego video as his illustration for the talk that he gave,” Deffenbacher said. “ I just think the Lego song and all the stuff in it is super fun. So that’s my favorite memory.”
