On Saturday, February 3, the Fresno Christian Chamber and Concert Choir will take the stage for the 9th annual Valentine’s Day concert. Vocalists look forward to this event all year because it gives them a chance to share a song of their choice that differs from their typical choral music. The production, hosted by Susan Ainley and Ben Certain, will take place at 7 p.m. in the SMC. Tickets will be for sale at the door and sold for $5 for students and $10 for general admission.
The theme this year is “Just the Two of Us.” Fresno Christian’s award winning choir has been working for weeks to pay tribute to the season of love with solos and duets of genres such as pop, country, Disney, jazz, and Broadway musical numbers. With the addition of a live band, this performance will be one you don’t want to miss.
McKenzie Sue, ‘24, will be performing in the concert for the third time. She will finish off her senior year with a solo, “Close To You” by The Carpenters, and a duet with Sophia Adams, ‘24, entitled “100 Easy Ways To Lose A Man” from the musical “Wonderful Town.”
“I am always nervous about performing, but Mrs. Ainley and Mr. Certain always prepare us as much as possible, so I’m definitely less nervous than I could be,” Kenzie said. “This concert is always my favorite event of the year!”
The idea for this performance arose in 2016 as an opportunity for the choir to showcase their vocal abilities during the gap between the Christmas concert and their NYC trip to sing with the National Youth Choir. Come January, students have the opportunity to audition for a chance at performing heart-warming ballads for an audience full of familiar faces.
“It’s so much behind-the-scenes work for myself and Mr. Certain, but every year we say ‘worth it’ and do it again,” Ainley said.
This year, we can expect to see Cheer and Leadership Advisor Coach Hope Villines hosting. Since the first performance in 2016, the concert has grown to fill every seat in the SMC with people still standing in the back. The proceeds of this concert help to fund the choir’s trip to Anaheim for the Worldstrides competition in April. Mark your calendars and clear your plans, for this is a highly-anticipated event you won’t want to overlook.
