COLUMN: Donald Trump as political maverick

COLUMN%3A+Donald+Trump+as+political+maverick
ReesR-bio
[/media-credit] Co-editor-in-chief Rees Roggenstein shares his opinion on the Donald Trump campaign.

The Republican primaries stand out as a perplexing occasion for all Americans to observe. The primary hosts a series of personalities that clash and battle with one another for the nomination to run for the presidency on the right-wing ticket.

Yet even among these already vibrant, strong, and powerful candidates, one stands out as an enigma. Among his compatriots and adversaries, his personality shines the brightest, his voice echoes the loudest, his passion burns the hottest, and his hair leaves something to be desired.

Donald Trump. This self-made man stands as a complete enigma in the political spectrum. He can make controversial remarks and not face condemnation that sticks. He can throw out journalists from a press conference and not be called on it. He can attack any opponent, and when they do the same to him, the opponent faces the flame instead.

It is as if he has some kind of shield or super power. I am simply baffled at his success in the polls given his lack of political correctness.

Perhaps this lack of political background is what makes Trump an appealing candidate to the voters. He has no prior political motives. He is a self-made man that pays for his own political campaign. He says what he wants and does not apologize. He cannot be bought, sold, or told by anyone else but himself. He is the antithesis to the politically correct and timid culture that has been bred in the past couple years.

Though the man with the impeccable hair may, or may not sit at the helm of this nation, his recent success in the polls do show a shift in Americans. The people have grown tired of the status quo and genuinely desire a drastic change in the political structure. — Rees Roggenstein

A vote for Trump is not so much a vote for the man himself (though I am sure there are a number of people voting for him because they agree with his policies). It is more a vote in favor of another path for America, a different path from the politicians.

Though the man with the impeccable hair may, or may not sit at the helm of this nation, his recent success in the polls do show a shift in Americans. The people have grown tired of the status quo and genuinely desire a drastic change in the political structure.

Whether Donald Trump will be the man to bring this change is up for dispute, but the peoples’ reaction to him do make it clear that there is a desire for actual change.

Good point! I definitely agree that Donald Trump is rising up in the polls, because he is so different. People like the idea of him making bold statements and not getting called out on it.
