All good things must come to an end. This is especially true in the world of sports. Whether it is an unstoppable championship team, genius coach, or spectacular player, most stories of success end with a less-than-impressive ending. We saw it in athletes such as Michael Jordan and Brett Farve, and recently in Kobe Bryant. As we near the halfway point of the grueling 82-game NBA season, it is becoming apparent that there is a passing of the torch as King of the NBA between LeBron James and Stephen Curry.
Since his rookie season James has completely dominated the NBA. Coming into the league straight out of high school James was Rookie of the Year in 2004 and did not stop there, winning four MVP awards, two NBA finals, and being named an all-star for 11 consecutive years. As he climbed his way to stardom, critics said that he would not be able to play at his physical level of play once he passed his peak. James continued to prove them wrong as year after year he came back better than ever playing at the highest level.
Now that Curry has proven himself as the best player in the NBA right now, he can now focus on chipping away at being one of the best players of all time. In Curry’s case it is not if he will become one of the best of all time but when will he become one of the best of all time. –Phillip Christopher
This season LeBron has continued to play at an extremely high level of play but there is another player who has exceeded him. Stephen Curry of the Golden State Warriors has been playing spectacular. The young player is known for his quick plays and extraordinary 3-pointers. He is the leader of the best team in the NBA right now; as the Warriors are 38-4. Curry has played in 39 of the games and is leading the league in scoring with 29.9 PPG. James is usually the talk of the league own the spotlight on every sports show but Curry is slowly taking over that spotlight.
With all of the talk of Curry possibly being the best player in the league, everyone was ready to see the Cavaliers take on the Warriors in Cleveland, Jan. 18. The two players squared off in California on Christmas day where the Warriors took the win by 6 points. James fans made the argument that the Warriors had home court advantage and that one game does not prove anything. Curry was looking forward to the game in Cleveland to prove the doubters wrong and show that he should be recognized as the best player in the league.
Last night, Curry did not disappoint and definitely claimed his spot as the top player in the NBA. The Warriors came into the Quicken Loans arena ready for battle. Curry put up 35 points in 28 minutes of play along with 3 steals. He made 7 3-pointers and at one point helped the Warriors push their huge lead to 43 points. LeBron on the other hand did have 16 points but gave up 3 turnovers and shot 3 3-pointers missing all of them. Curry completely dominated the court and helped the Warriors a very convincing win over the best team in the Eastern Conference.
Has Curry finally surpassed LeBron as the best player in the NBA? I think the answer to that is yes. Curry won the league MVP last year and lead his team to an NBA championship over LeBron and the Cavaliers. This year the two teams played again, in a rematch on Christmas day where the Warriors won by six points.
Last night they met once again in Cleveland where it would was thought that LeBron would have the upper hand but Curry had other plans. Curry had 31 points through three quarters and lead the Warriors to a 132-98 win. Based on their record alone Curry has proven that he is the leader of the best team in the league.
Now that Curry has proven himself as the best player in the NBA right now, he can now focus on chipping away at being one of the best players of all time. To complete that take he is going to need a few more rings and MVPs under his belt and then he will be in the discussion. In Curry’s case it is not if he will become one of the best of all time but when will he become one of the best of all time.
