Girls Basketball Playoff Sport Short: Caruthers
The Eagles headed into playoffs playing the No. 2 seed, Caruthers, Feb. 24. This would be the Lady Eagles first playoff appearance in 5 years. They practiced all week with intensity to try and upset Caruthers. The game ended up going as planned, for Caruthers. FC was down two key players; Natalia Hill, ‘17, and Kaylee Ferguson, ‘18.
FC played well with Hill and Ferguson both on the court. Hill brought energy and played with pure physicality and aggression. Ferguson on the other hand was more of a finesse and calm a player. With these two players, the Eagles recorded all four of their wins. Sophomore Erin Wilson led division five in blocked shots, averaging 2.1 a game.
“My highlight of the season was when we beat Avenal by one point,” Hill said. ” I want to win the championship and get more girls out to play. Watching the Caruthers game it took a lot of will power and heavy breathing so I wouldn’t get frustrated.”
Our goal was to get an extra game. Being so young the more games we play the more opportunity our team gets to play and build our basketball IQ. Our goal is to be in Selland Arena in the next two years. It’s going to take work by the players and coaches but it’s in reach. I’d love to follow the success of the boys team and have the Fresno Christian boys and girls playing back to back for a championship at Selland Arena. — Robert Foshee
Caruthers, the winner of the WSL with a perfect league record of 10-0 was not phased by the Eagles play. Caruthers played with confidence and they played fast. They pressured the Eagles the entire game even being up by almost 80 points. Macie Thompson helped the Eagles by scoring six out of the nine total points in the game.
Our game plan going into the game was to play our best and have fun, “Thompson said. “I think the season went well and we got better throughout the season even if the score did not show that. My goal for next year is to play hard, work hard, and to try our best to win and improve our game.”
FC is a young team; they did not have one senior this year. The team consisted of four freshman, four sophomores, and one junior. The lady basketball program looks promising for the future. The Eagles might of have struggled this year scoring, but with the whole team returning next year, the Eagles plan for success. Head Coach Robert Foshee believes that the girl team has potential to be a valley championship contender.
“Our goal was to get an extra game,” Foshee said. “Being so young the more games we play the more opportunity our team gets to play and build our basketball IQ. Our goal is to be in Selland Arena in the next two years. It’s going to take work by the players and coaches but it’s in reach. I’d love to follow the success of the boys team and have the Fresno Christian boys and girls playing back to back for a championship at Selland Arena.”
