UPDATE: January 13, 2026
Three days into the new year, Venezuelan dictator Nicolás Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores de Maduro, were captured under the cover of night. The successful US military action, codenamed Operation Absolute Resolve, brought Maduro and his wife to New York to be charged with narco-terrorism and drug trafficking.
The immediate response is mixed. Many Venezuelans celebrate the intervention of the US in removing the dictator from power. With many questions still to answer, a renewed hope fills the hearts of Venezuelans. Others argue that interfering in regime changes exceeds the power of the executive branch and is therefore unconstitutional.
President Donald Trump, in his speech on Jan. 3, verified Venezuela under temporary American control.
“We will run the country until such time as we can do a safe, proper and judicious transition,” Trump said. “We can’t take a chance that someone else takes over Venezuela who doesn’t have the interest of Venezuelans in mind.”
Venezuelan news continues to unfold each day, such as the seizure of sanctioned crude oil from Venezuelan tankers. Recent meetings with big oil executives foreshadow lower prices for various amenities, such as lower gas prices and decreased energy costs. Many hope that the Humanitarian Crisis in Venezuela will be repaired with these new developments.

The rising tensions between the United States of America and Venezuela have sparked a situation that could lead to a regional war. The deployment of U.S. Marine forces, specifically the 22nd Marine Expeditionary Unit, is stationed aboard the Iwo Jima Amphibious Ready Group off the coast of Venezuela. This indicates that both countries are on high alert.
Political Tensions
One major reason the conflict started is strong opposition to Nicolás Maduro’s dictatorship, which has led President Donald Trump to place a rising bounty on his head and designate cartels and other organizations as foreign terrorists in Jan. 2025. The Venezuelan government under his leadership has become a direct threat to America through drug trafficking, which has been branded as narco-terrorism. This opposition has heightened tensions to the point where there is now a strong military movement and strikes against 22 alleged drug boats since Sept.
Economic Pressure
Economic pressure is a key factor due to the sanctions placed on Venezuela by the U.S. These sanctions target the oil industry, Venezuelan government officials and intended pressure on Nicolás Maduro to fix and improve his government. The economic collapse began around 2013-14 with mismanagement of government spending, corrupt policies and hyper inflation. Intervention from the U.S. has increased the bitterness between these two nations.
Because Venezuela relies on its surplus of oil, which totals over 303 billion barrels in reserve, they feel safe in their global connections. Those relationships with belligerent countries moved the United States to seize control of a sanctioned Iranian oil tanker in Venezuela on Dec. 11. The restriction on those overabundances caused the Venezuelan government to take a more aggressive stance against the United States.
Military Pressure
The 22nd Marine Expeditionary Unit is preparing for an immediate deployment, amphibious assaults and special operations. Stationed aboard the Iwo Jima Amphibious Ready Group off the coast of Venezuela, the Marines train not only for combat but also to address irregular threats like drug trafficking. The armed presence, combined with multiple strikes on drug smuggling boats, increases the risk of conflict.
One U.S. military officer emphasized the U.S. the approach to regional security, describing it as a demonstration of military strength.
“The United States is interested in helping partner nations develop their capabilities because the safer the Caribbean waters are, the safer the United States is,” he said.

The U.S. has deployed thousands of Marines, sailors and naval personnel to the Caribbean. These forces include the USS Gerald Ford vessel strike group, B-1B bombers and guided missile destroyers near Venezuelan waters. Venezuela responded with over 125,000 troops and civilians, showing how both nations are preparing for the tension to snap.
In an interview with The Hill, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth described Operation Southern Spear as a mission against the drug trafficking crisis, afflicting the nation and the urgent threat posed by narco-terrorism from Venezuela.
“Secure our homeland from the drugs that are killing our people,” Hegseth said.
From the Venezuelan side, President Maduro issued a warning regarding foreign intervention.
“If they come to touch Venezuela, there you will see people determined to defend this homeland to the death,” Maduro said.
Across social media platforms, teens are seeing bits and pieces of information splashing across their screens, leaving many to wonder why any involvement in the South American Country is happening.
In discussing the risks of war escalation, Fresno Christian High School Bible and English teacher Brian Butler cautions against the long-term impacts of aggression.

“I understand the urgency of stopping the drugs killing so many people,” Butler said. “But when we take extreme actions without due process, we risk setting the stage for future abuse.”
Recent political, economic and military circumstances are fueling tensions between the United States and Venezuela. Both nations are demonstrating their willingness to protect their interests through political statements and strategic naval placements. The U.S. shows its readiness through its 22nd Marine Expeditionary Unit and naval assets, while Venezuela is preparing its troops and civilians in a more defensive setup.
As these actions continue and hostility remains high, the economic, political, and military factors drive the conflict and are becoming increasingly clear. Both countries appear to be bracing for possible outcomes of this situation.
