[/media-credit] The opening of weekend of the NFL 2016-17 season did not disappoint.

The Feather would like to introduce the continuation of our new sports column section from last year, with a transition into sports outside of FC. Columnists Dawson Triplitt, and Alexander Rurik will provides a weekly look into the field of professional sports. From MLB to NBA, they discusses what is happening in the world of sports.

This past weekend was the first week of the 2016-2017 NFL season. There were several close games this weekend headlined by four games decided by a single point. A couple of the games went to overtime including the Chiefs and Chargers. There were a few crucial injuries in week 1 including Keenan Allen going down for the year with a torn ACL and Robert Griffin going down possibly for the season.

This could possibly have been the best slate of opening week games ever, so many close high scoring games, so many entertaining games with high powered offenses. As well as Terrence Williams not going out of bounds and not allowing the Cowboys to get the chance to win the game with a Dan Bailey kick.

The Vikings really surprised me this week. Their defense is the sole reason they won that game and scored not one, but two touchdowns which was amazing. The Vikings defense is definitely for real. The Patriots defense looked really good as it won them the game against the Cardinals without Tom Brady.

Derek Carr and the high powered Raider’s offense was able to keep pace with the New Orleans Saints who were having a fantastic day offensively. Jack Del Rio with the gutsy call that would either give them the win or take the loss in week one. After scoring a touchdown, Del Rio decided against going for the tie. He went for two when down 1 point and it led to the Raiders getting the win.

In terms of Fantasy Football’s opening week a couple of key storylines to watch. Spencer Ware’s incredible performance filling in for the injured Jamaal Charles. Keenan Allen a consensus second round pick going out for the year in the first week of the season.

After today's (September 29, 2013) win over the Jacksonville Jaguars
[/media-credit] Andrew Luck had an amazing performance this week throwing for four touchdowns and over 300 yards.

Drew Brees and his two stud receivers going off for tons of points. Two consensus first rounders that greatly underperformed who’s names are Adrian Peterson and Devonta Freeman. DeAngelo Williams becoming the oldest running back to have 100+ yards as well as two touchdowns. Andrew Luck returning to his former self with a fantastic week 1 performance.

After 1 day of not having any NFL games I am already looking forward to week 2. A couple of match ups that intrigue me are the inner division battles this early in the season. Such as the Packers high powered offense against the Vikings impressive defense. Two high powered offenses in the Steelers and Bengals should be a

very high scoring game. I expect over 70 total points easily in that game.

In week 2 I expect Ryan Matthews to have a fantastic game against the terrible Bears defense. I believe Brandon Marshall will pick up and make up for his lackluster week 1 performance. He will be demanding the ball from Ryan Fitzpatrick. If you lost Keenan Allen last week pick up Tyrell Williams who will now be the number 2 in the Chargers offense and his usage saw a huge spike after Allen went down.
