The current global pandemic has altered or canceled in person sports and extracurricular events for the safety of students and their communities. Campus choir, led by director Susan Ainley, announces the cancellation of the 19th annual Christmas concert due to COVID-19, Dec. 1.
Soprano choir student, Ellianna Gonzolez, ‘23, shares her experience in choir and the impact of COVID.
“I have been in the Christmas concert three years now and I’ve loved getting together as a community and learning from each other,” Gonzalez said. “That is something I will miss the most.”
Choir usually performs carols and hymns, such as, “Away in a Manger”, “Lo! How a Rose E’er Blooming”, and “Carol of the Bells” during the December concert. Ainley speaks about her struggles and their adjustments for this year.
“This year we are learning Christmas music just for the enjoyment of it, but we have found a few places to sing in public,” Ainley said. “However, we will be performing at a Christmas lunch at Sunnyside Country Club, Dec. 17. We will also do some “caroling” around campus.”
Choir has adjusted to COVID restrictions by meeting in the JJ room and sitting spaced apart, wearing masks, staying in their seats, and having their own assigned binder. Even though choir class is having to modify their schedule, they were still able to participate in the Westmont College Virtual Festival which they have already pre-recorded and sent in November.
Many families have been affected by the global pandemic, consider giving back to the community this holiday season with local fundraisers, donating to the annual teacher Christmas gift baskets or buying script cards from FC in building five. Merry Christmas!
