While on the surface Track and Field can be viewed as another sport centered around running, quite the opposite is true; it includes a multitude of events across a variety of skills. From running an intense 1600-meter race to throwing the discus and stretching out for a long jump, this sport requires a lot from the bodies of participants.
Hearing the shot crack, pacing yourself through every step and racing towards the finish line you’ve crossed many times before, track and field requires a refinement of skills that demands a ton of preparation and drive. Fresno Christian Track and Field passes the baton into another highly-anticipated season, striving towards the success that earned them multiple Valley Championship victories and state meet appearances from their athletes.
Coach Dorina Gilmore-Young serves and coaches alongside husband Shawn Young, amplifying not only the skills and abilities of their athletes but also their character and integrity as a team.
“We approach every season as a new opportunity,” Gilmore-Young said. “We look at which athletes we have, their strengths and goals, and then build from there.”

The Gilmore-Youngs have built the program over 20 years and prioritize training athletes in running, jumping and throwing, but also in life skills like proper nutrition, the importance of rest and anchoring the team in their faith. Madison Seibert runs cross country and Track and Field. Her true joy is running, training and competing as a distance athlete.
“I’m so excited to continue running for these amazing track coaches,” Seibert said. “They are very kind and encouraging and Christ-like.”
Although the Track and Field team saw the loss of several key players last year, they maintain their healthy core, along with an influx of new additions consisting of new transfers and athletes carrying over from a different sport. Daryl Scott, ‘28, has played basketball at Fresno Christian for his first year since transferring from Clovis East.
“A selling point to this program is that here everyone believes and supports everyone,” Scott said. “Being able to pray with my team before every practice and game is a blessing.”
Scott will be focusing on the 400 meters this season, hoping to break the school record and possibly run some relays.

“We are thrilled about Daryl joining our team,” Gilmore-Young said. “He brings a fresh energy and competitiveness along with quiet humility to our boys’ side.”
Track and Field kicked off their season with multiple meets, competing at the Buchanan Distance Classic and the Central Valley Relays at Dinuba High School. Like the starting gun signaling the start of the race, the season commenced with a bang, with various athletes smashing new personal records.
Blake Bay finished first overall in the 1600 meters with a time of 4:21.32, running an incredible 61-second last lap, overtaking his final opponent at the final stretch. Madison Siebert not only set a new PR but broke another school record, finishing the 3200 meters with a time of 11:26.96.
With their next meet at the Dave Dodson Spring Classic hosted in Sanger on March 7, make sure to come out and support your Eagles as they start the beginning of another heated and historic season.
