Students discuss NFL quarterback controversies

Following the conclusion of week three of the 2019 NFL season, Kyle Clem, ’21, sat down with juniors Bryson Graham and Carston Saelzler to discuss the major headlines from the week, Sept. 24. One of the most controversial and scrutinized quarterbacks of recent memory received his first start this week against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

New York Giants quarterback Daniel Jones, No. 6 overall pick in the draft, received his first start this week and proceeded to silence his doubters. Jones completed the week throwing for over 300 yards and accounting for 4 total touchdowns, two through the air and two on the ground.

Jones added to that performance with a 64% completion rate. This start marks a new era for the Giants after committing themselves to two-time Super Bowl MVP Eli Manning for the past 18 seasons.

In other news related to the New York Giants, superstar running back Saquon Barkley is expected to be sidelined for the next 6-8 weeks with a high ankle sprain. In the meantime, Fantasy owners of Barkley must search for a viable option to fill in while Barkley recovers. A few qualified options include Los Angeles Chargers running back Justin Jackson and Washington Redskins running back Chris Thompson.

Another quarterback that broke out in week three was Carolina Panthers quarterback Kyle Allen. Allen threw for 4 touchdowns and led the Panthers to a victory over the Arizona Cardinals. This success raises the question of whether or not the Panthers should commit to Allen for the rest of the season, or keep struggling starter Cam Newton in the lineup once he returns from injury. This season, Newton has yet to account for a touchdown while Allen posted four last week.

Stay tuned next week for a review of week four of the NFL season.
