COLUMN: 2nd year Feather staffer shares passion

[/media-credit] World War II Veteran’s are honored at Fresno’s 100th annual Veteran’s Day Parade, Nov. 11, 2019.

Something about my junior year didn’t seem right. I felt as though my free time was growing more and more every day. I decided to get out of my comfort zone and expand my knowledge by becoming a journalist for my school’s newspaper.

With morning trainings and multiple class periods, I was able to write articles and begin new series for The Feather such as Girl Talk and Sports Records. I could tell my writing skills were growing not only in my articles, but in my other classes as well.

Heading into my senior year, I wanted to grow even more. I wanted to incorporate my writing skills into my work while learning how to capture student life through the lens of a camera.

From photographing sports, chapels and other school events, my love for photography grew more than I expected. I remember a specific time where I knew photography could be a hobby I pursue after high school. I had photographed a home basketball game against Orange Cove and my pictures were presented on our TV in the hallway.

Multiple basketball players were crowded win front of the TV and commenting on how much they liked the photos. The feeling I got from the moment is something I cannot forget. I felt a sense of happiness that people noticed my photography and wanted to keep my photos.

I have had so many amazing opportunities such as photographing the 100th annual Veteran’s Day Parade and interviewing Jimmy Chin. Without The Feather, I would not be where I am today and would not have the knowledge I do now.
